A nord dello stato di Zhao c'era lo stato di Yan, dove a ShouLing un giovane era venuto a conoscenza della cosa, e allora dalla sua remota citta natale andò a HanDan per imparare la postura degli abitanti.
Arrivato a HanDan giunse in una strada principale e si rese conto che l'incedere della gente era veramente diverso dal proprio, invece poco gradevole.
Entusiasta, si fece fermo proposito di dover imparare a camminare come loro.
In quel momento un giovane si stava avvicinando, allora egli standogli dietro egli si mise a imitarlo.
Quello muoveva il piede sinistro, e anche lui sollevava il piede sinistro; quello muoveva il piede destro, e anche lui muoveva il piede destro.
Però prestando attenzione al piede si dimenticava del braccio, e per seguire la parte superiore del corpo si dimenticava di quella inferiore.
Allo stesso modo seguì un vecchio e una fanciulla, ma alla fine non solo non imparò l'incedere degli abitanti di HanDan, ma dimenticò anche il proprio.
Quando fu ora di tornare a ShouLing ormai era capace solo di arrancare.
Da allora la gente si riferisce a questa storia per indicare il copiare ciecamente un'altra persona, fino al punto di dimenticare le proprie abilità originarie.

赵国的北部,燕国寿陵的一位少年听到这个消息,就从很远的家乡来到邯郸,学习邯郸人走路的姿势。
到了邯郸,他来到大街上,发现这里人们走路的姿势确实与自己走的姿势不一样,并且比自己走得好看。
他十分高兴,下决心一定要学习好。
这时,一位年轻人走过来,于是他就跟在这位年轻人后边学起来。
年轻人迈左腿,他也抬左腿;年轻人迈右腿,他也抬右腿。
但是他顾了腿顾不了胳膊,顾了下身忘了上身。
他也学过一位老年人,一位年轻妇女,但是到底他没学到邯郸人走路的姿态,反倒连自己原来走路的方法也忘掉了。
等到他回寿陵的时候,只好爬着回去了。
后来,人们用“邯郸学步”或“学步邯郸”这句成语,比喻只知道盲目地模仿别人,结果连自己原来的技能也丢掉了。
