Living in China you often get to hear “China has more than 5000 years of history.”
Often the next sentence is “China’s history is longer than European nations’ history.”
Well, let’s do some quick math.
The meaning of the word “history” is “actual historical sources”, not “myths and legends”.
Counting myths, then we could include Atlantis, nine thousand years ago, and we’d win.
I know there is no prize, but it’s only for the spirit of the post.
Counting only reliable historical sources we are obliged to leave the Xia dinasty off, since the very existence of the said dinasty is not certain.
Including archeological findings, we could count our Bronze Age, 6500 years ago, and we would win again.
So, we could set the beginning of Chinese history at the Shang dinasty’s oracle bones, more or less 3700 years ago.
At that time Rome had still to be founded, but ancient Greece’s oldest findings are from just about that time, how strange!
At this point the defendants of Chinese culture usually start saying that Chinese history is the history of a single nation, one single place, uninterrupted through the centuries.
This is ridiculous, we all know that ancient China has nothing to do with today’s China.
Just think about the Warring states, the “Spring and Autumn” perios, the northern and southern Song: many places, many peoples.
If we were allowed to count such variety, then we would have to count also ancient Egypt: 5000 years ago, and we would be winners again!
Note

  • 文献 (wénxiàn): “data” or “documents”, but specifically related to a country’s history/culture.
  • 记载 (jìzǎi): “record; account”, most used when talking about history
  • 具有 (jùyǒu): “possess, be provided with”
  • 依据 (yījù) “on the basis of”. Basically same meaning as 按照 (ànzhào), 根据 (gēnjù), 案据 (ànjù).
Interestingly, “copper” is also 铜. If you have to differentiate, you can use 青铜 (qīngtóng) for bronze.
  • 记录 (jìlù) “take notes”; “record”
  • 胜出 (shèng chū) “win” (colloquial)
  • 真巧 (zhēn qiǎo) “how strange”, “how lucky”, “che combinazione!”
  • 割断 (gēduàn) “sever”, “cut off”. Same as 剪断 (jiǎnduàn)
  • 多样化 (duōyànghuà) “diversify”, “make varied”

a, lǎobǎn, shénme shíhòu fēizhōu gēn ōuzhōu lā zài yīqǐ le?

Quotato un post letto, secondo te, è corretto?

  4. daba:
    2) Ignoranza sulle lingue asiatiche:
